First Day of School

Today was Austin's first day of preschool. He woke up very excited to go!  He helped pick out his outfit to wear and had a yummy breakfast of oatmeal.  Then he played with Sarah for a few minutes before he couldn't wait any longer and was begging to go to his new school.

A little play time before getting ready to go...
Proud of his new backpack (which is almost as big as he is - looking at this picture, I wonder if he would actually fit IN the backpack?).
Check out the new shoes - his first pair of shoes with laces to tie.
Ready to go...

Arriving at his classroom and humoring mommy by posing by the welcome sign and balloons by the door for a picture.
Then he said, "Mommy, I want to go in my classroom" and promptly headed on in.  He took of his backpack and I helped him find his locker cubby to hang it up in.  I then realized that I forgot to label his backpack and a kid in the cubby next to him had the same backpack.  I navigated through the throng of parents following their kid around with video cameras to ask for a piece of tape from the teacher so I could label his backpack quickly before heading out.  He was off happily playing with toys.  This was what he was up to...
I told him Mommy was going to go now and I would come back to get him in a little bit.  He very calmly asked me where I was going, then said "OK. Bye mom!" and went back to playing. Sarah and I headed home.  Sarah ate, played, and had a nap, then we headed back to pick up Austin.   Meanwhile, I was playing telephone tag with our realtor in Rochester as we worked out some kinks in the process with the buyers for our Rochester house (who are being jerks...but that is another story!).  I was 5 minutes early to pick up Austin, but most of the kids were already gone.  I went in and found him ready with his backpack on, holding his teacher's hand.  I asked him how it went and he said "I don't want to leave."  I figured that was a good sign and that things had gone well. I said "Did you have fun at school today?" and the teacher chimed in that he was sad for a while because he hit the other kids and she had to tell him "No."  I found this pretty upsetting, especially given that it had apparently been a concern in his ECFE class back in Rochester, but they hadn't told us until the very end of the year.  I was hoping preschool would be different.  Hopefully, his behavior improves.  I can't believe my kid is the bully!  We got in the car and as I was strapping him in, I asked him what he did in school today.  He replied, "I played with the toys and I hit the other kids."  Later at lunchtime, he said "Mommy, I was looking for you. I didn't know where you were."  It sounds like he got upset when he was reprimanded and wanted to run to Mommy.  So...we had some mixed reviews from school today.  We'll see how Thursday goes.

In other happenings...we enjoyed some time at Nanny and Grandpa's this weekend, playing in the kiddie pool.
Sarah wasn't so sure about it and only lasted a minute before crying and wanting out.
Austin had a blast splashing and playing with Nanny and Auntie Michelle.
Sarah hanging out with Grandpa
And working on her standing skills - she LOVES standing up and might just skip crawling and go straight to walking.

That's all for now.  Happy back to school time.  I've been busy with sports physicals and back to school vaccines at work, so it will be interesting to see how the schedule and appointment types shift as school begins.
