Trevor's 2nd Birthday!

Trevor turns 2 on August 23rd, but since we'll be attending a wedding that day, we celebrated Trevor's birthday 1 week early!  We had family over for a party on Saturday and it turned out to be a bit of a crazy day.  We celebrated with a "Little Engine That Could" theme.  He loves that book and will say parts of the story along with me when I read it to him.

Trevor was excited to see the balloons Daddy got for him.
But was frustrated that the strings got tangled up.
Everything was going well until Trevor screamed hysterically for over 1.5 hours instead of napping.  This was the unfortunate scene...
We had no idea what was wrong and were quite nervous that he was going to totally melt down at the party because he was so tired!  By the time the party rolled around, though, he actually did great!  Check out the "Little Engine That Could" shirt we got him.
We enjoyed getting to see family.  Theo was happy to see Auntie Trish.
The big kids decided to have some coloring time to make fliers for their "music concert" in the basement before dinner.
Trevor was excited to participate in the coloring activities.
Then the concert...
Trevor on the guitar.
Alexis on the recorder.
Sarah on the drums.
And Austin banging on the bean bag game like a big drum.
It was quite the cacophony, but the kids had fun!

We had a yummy dinner of penne rustica and cauliflower salad.
Fichtels joined us later and got some snuggle time with Theo.

Time to open gifts.
Trevor looked at the cards with Mommy, then opened each gift, and said, "Thank you!"
 On to cake time...
 "Happy Birthday to you..."
I had to hold Trevor's hand aside so he wouldn't touch the flame on the candle, but he blew out the candle all by himself.
Checking out his cake and saying, "I think I can! I think I can!"

Trevor's birthday cake!
The base is a sheet cake of white almond wedding cake and the mountain is chocolate cake.  It is all covered in our family recipe buttercream frosting.  The "dirt" under the train tracks is brown sugar and the train tracks are made of root beer licorice for the slats and black licorice for the tracks.  The mountain is also decorated with candy chocolate "rocks".  The train set was a replica of the original illustrations and was made years ago and now out of production.  We found it on eBay for an only mildly unreasonable price, but we really wanted to get it to use it for the cake and then let him play with it on his train table!
This shot looks just like the one in the book when "at last they reached the top of the mountain!" (one of Trevor's favorite parts of the book!)

Trevor got a piece of cake, but he was sooooo tired and wiped out by then, he barely touched it.

Unfortunately, the scene from nap time repeated after bed time.  He slept for about 20 minutes, then awoke screaming and cried for a long time without an obvious reason.  He and Sarah had little runny noses and mild coughs, but nothing more than that, so we weren't sure why he was going crazy (again!). He eventually asked to go back to his crib and I stood up to take him back to his crib, but only made it about 10 feet before he threw up everywhere. We got him cleaned up, bathed, and snuggled and he was eventually back to sleep and feeling better.  As soon as we got to sleep ourselves (about 1:30am), Austin woke up with croup, stridor and all.  Ugh!  We cancelled Trevor's photo shoot for Sunday morning, stayed home from church to let the kids recover, and got all 3 kids to nap!  The big kids went to Chanhassen Dinner Theater with Daddy to see the Little Mermaid while Trevor and I hung out at home.  After dinner, Trevor had a chance to enjoy his cake now that he was feeling better!

On to Daddy's birthday on Monday!  Then off to a friend's wedding next weekend and Elizabeth's wedding the weekend after that.  Then school starts!
