We had a CRAZY day on Halloween! It involved a doctor's appointment, a visit from the fire department, and a shattered iPad! I will explain...
On Tuesday, Trevor had his 2 month well child visit. He weighed 15 pounds (96th percentile), was 25 inches tall (95th percentile), and his head circumference was 16 inches (59th percentile). Apparently he did not inherit the big Cronk sized head like Austin and Sarah did. At his appointment, we discussed that he still has some nystagmus (eyes darting back and forth horizontally very fast) when he is feeding or sucking on his pacifier. He has no other obvious eye problems or nerve/development problems, but since his eyes are still doing that at 2 months old, Dr. Judy referred us to a pediatric ophthalmologist to check out his eyes to make sure they're OK. On Wednesday morning, I called the ophthalmologist's office to schedule an appointment, fully expecting them to be booked out a ways. The scheduler said she was booked out until December 17 OR there was an appointment open in 45 minutes! So I got dressed quickly, slammed down some breakfast and Trevor and I headed to the eye doctor. His appointment took almost 2 hours and they did a full eye exam including dilating his eyes and looking at the nerve, retina, etc in the back of his eye. Everything looked really good, except that the doctor thought that he was not quite as "visually attentive" as he should be for a 2 month old. She thinks he is just behind on his visual development, but should catch up just fine. We have a recheck in 3 months to see how his eyes are doing then.
As we were waiting for Trevor's eyes to dilate, I called Steve to tell him what was going on at the appointment. He told me that he and Sarah were outside putting up Halloween decorations and they couldn't really go back in the house because the carbon monoxide detector in the playroom went off and he hadn't gotten anybody on the phone to come over to check it. He called our neighbor who is an HVAC professional and he suggested changing the battery to see if it is just low on battery and malfunctioning due to that. The new battery didn't help. Steve looked up who he should call and found he should call the fire department. He called the non-emergency line and left a message, but nobody had gotten back to him in a while. He called the city offices and they said he should call 911. So he did. When I pulled up to the house coming home from Trevor's appointment, there were 2 huge fire engines and 3 police/fire department SUVs all with lights blazing at my house. The firemen checked it out and found we did not have a CO problem, and recommended replacing the faulty detector.
As soon as we could go back in, I got Sarah some lunch, got Trevor to sleep for his nap, and got dinner in the crock pot while Steve headed to work for the department pumpkin carving contest. While he was gone, Sarah, Trevor and I headed to Austin's school for the surprise "pumpkin patch" for the Kindergarten kids. The teachers told the kids they were going to look for the Great Pumpkin and they gave them plastic grocery bags for them to collect trash they found along the way in the field. Actually, the parents were waiting for them just beyond a ridge on the side of the school. We all lined up and the kids got a big surprise (and LOTS of treats) when they came over the ridge. The kids trick-or-treated along the line of parents and had fun showing off their costumes. Then we headed home. We got home only a few minutes before Steve did. Austin usually asks to play on Daddy's iPad when he gets home from school, but this time, he was fussing because he couldn't find it. It was then that Steve realized that he had taken his iPad outside when he was looking up phone numbers to call for the CO detector. He went back outside to get it and it was gone! Nowhere to be found inside and out! Steve drove around the neighborhood looking for it, because he recalled he put it on the back of the car (which he now knows is a stupid idea!!) before he headed to work. We had a few very stressful hours worrying about the unsecured information on the iPad being used by someone who may have found it. Then it was returned to us by our neighbor. Someone had found it and put it on their front step thinking it was theirs since it landed closest to their house. The glass and casing on the front is totally shattered, but it actually appears to still be functional.
Right around that time, the kids were going crazy, the Chesters and Nanny arrived for trick or treating and we got things going for Halloween night! Alright, on to some photos!
Michelle and Brian came over on Sunday afternoon for our annual pumpkin carving.
Trevor was a happy boy in his adorable outfit from Auntie Diana. Check out the onesie with a sewn on personalized tie and the matching leg warmers - yes, leg warmers! Love it!
Sarah had fun helping dig the seeds and guts out of the pumpkins.
Austin wasn't so thrilled about getting messy, but was a good helper too.
Costume previews!
I was being goofy to get Austin to smile and he totally cracked up.
I was being silly and my family humored me...I wanted to see if we could put Trevor in a pumpkin. We had big pumpkins and they were wide enough to get his legs and body through the top, but they weren't tall enough to fit him in far enough to actually get more than his legs in the pumpkin. He still thought it was entertaining to sit on the top of the pumpkin and stand up holding on to the edge.
The finished products...
(I didn't figure out the camera settings to get good pumpkin photos until after Michelle and Brian had already gone home with their pumpkins, but here are the unlit photos)
Steve carved a pumpkin for each kiddo to match their costumes - a Cinderella pumpkin for Sarah, a Buzz Lightyear pumpkin for Austin and a dragon pumpkin for Trevor's dragon/dinosaur outfit.
He also carved a fun goofy face.
On to Halloween!
One of the many fire department vehicles out front.
Trevor wore his "Spooky Cute" outfit.
Eyes still dilated from the eye doctor.
Sarah declared that she wanted "princess hair," and when we were getting everything ready in the chaos, she showed us that princess hair was "wike dis" and started pulling the front of her hair straight up in the air. I put her hair up in a bun (or made my best attempt at it with her beautiful fine hair) and she loved it.
Putting on her princess slippers. She couldn't walk well enough in these for us to let her trick or treat in them, but she wanted to put them on to show everybody anyway.
Ready to trick-or-treat!
Cinderella with her Cinderella pumpkin.
Buzz Lightyear with his Buzz pumpkin.
And my little pumpkin with his pumpkin. He has a cute little spiked tail on the back of this costume too. Sweetest little dinosaur I've ever seen.
Happy Halloween from all of us!
Michelle and Brian dressed as the Flintstones and helped take the kids trick-or-treating.
Which the kids were super excited about!
Trick-or-treating.
They were SO cute trick-or-treating. They were VERY excited. We had to remind them sometimes to say "thank you" after they got their treats, but they were pretty good about it most of the time. If Sarah forgot to say "thank you" and was headed down the sidewalk or steps and we reminded her, she would turn around and run back to the door to say "thank you." Then when she ran down the sidewalk or driveway, at almost every house, she would squeal, "They gave me CANDY!!"I planned on only taking Trevor with us to a few houses along our part of the street, but he fell asleep shortly after getting started, so I just carried him the whole time we trick or treated. He was cozy warm in his costume and sleeping comfortably.
Steve had fun decorating the house with cobwebs and spiders, hanging bats, lights along the driveway and sidewalk, and black and orange lights in the coach lights. He also had all our pumpkins out on display and a steaming cauldron on the front step.
It was quite the whirlwind day and I don't think we'll soon forget this Halloween! Now we're helping the kids realize the candy buy back program at the dentist or the hospital is a great idea so the we can get some of the sweets out of the house. All this candy is not helping me get rid of the baby weight!
Next up is Austin's birthday! Then I head back to work on he 16th and life just continues to get busier as we head into the holidays.
