Austin's 5th Birthday!

Austin turned 5 on November 9!  He has been so excited to turn 5, more so than he has ever been for previous birthdays.  His birthday fell on a Wednesday, so he got to be the birthday boy at preschool and bring treats for the class.  He opened presents from Mommy and Daddy on his birthday (saving the rest for his birthday party over the weekend).  He was very excited about the airplanes sets we got him!
We also got Sarah a little gift.  She has been obsessed with Cookie Monster lately, so we got her a little plush Cookie Monster.  This is Sarah's face as I pulled him out from behind my back and she got a peek at him...
SO EXCITED!
Displaying him triumphantly.
 Giving him hugs.
Austin got some play time with his new toys before reluctantly heading to bed.  He has been doing a great job sharing, even with his new toys.  Here he is checking out one of his airplanes.
He and Sarah flew the airplanes around the kitchen for a while, running and giggling like crazy.
On Saturday, we had family over for a birthday party.
Austin and Alexis had a blast playing together.
And Sarah got in on the play time too.
Kevin and Keng came for the party and had fun playing with the kids.
After a supper of penne rustica, Austin got to open his presents.  He was so precious!  He insisted on opening the card first. He carefully opened the card, then held it up and READ it on his own (yes, he can read really well already!), then thanked whoever the card and gift were from, then carefully opened the gift, putting each scrap of wrapping paper in the garbage bag along the way.  I don't know many 5 year olds that open presents like that!  Too cute!
Sarah got a little gift from Nanny too.
Austin was very excited about all his gifts.  He has had his eye on some construction toys, and when he opened this "wheel loader" toy, he declared excitedly, "This is just what I wanted!!"
He got lots of wonderful gifts and we've been having fun playing with them.  Thanks to everybody for being so sweet and generous.

After presents, it was time for cake!  Steve and I went with the construction theme and made him a cake in the shape of the number 5 with construction toys on it.  We're proud of how well it turned out and Austin loved it!
My favorite parts...
I made the "scooper truck" have the letter N for the end of Austin's name in it's bucket and made it look like it was placing it on the cake at the end of his name.  I also made the dump truck look like it was dumping rocks by putting chocolate rocks in the truck bed (held in place by a bit of buttercream frosting underneath) and tipped it up like it was dumping.
We have a digger truck digging into the side of the cake.
We had a road made of black fondant (the only part that was fondant - I really don't like that stuff).  We put the steam roller on the road and then made an unfinished road out of crumbed Oreos to look like the steam roller hadn't rolled it flat yet.
Austin was excited about his cake, especially that there were more toys on the cake that he got to play with later.

It was a great party and Austin had a blast!  The kids were thoroughly worn out by all the activity (as were the parents).

A bit of other fun...
Lately, Sarah has been making a cute "evil eye" face at us sometimes.  Now we can sometimes get her to do it on cue.  Last week, we had dinner at Noodles and, while we were there, I took a little video of Sarah giving us the "evil eye."
