Her first comp of the season was in Duluth for her solo and small group.
She did an incredible job on her ballet pointe solo and placed 4th overall!! (which is incredible because it is very difficult to score highly with ballet in these competitions, as it is SO technically difficult!)
While in Duluth, we took the opportunity to visit some Minnesota landmarks along the North Shore that we have never been to before! I feel like a real Minnesotan now! Thanks to the Schafroth family for being our North Shore adventure guides.
Split Rock Lighthouse
Betty's Pies for lunch
Gooseberry Falls
Sarah managed to keep her white Converse shoes white while hiking along the waterfall!
Then a hill overlooking Duluth
While we were there, Trevor had his Pot o' Gold Fencing Tournament at his club back at home. He did really well and placed 7th overall in Y12!
Back to dance...Sarah's elite tap small group competed in Duluth as well and did a great job! I love this dance!
Sarah's school essay was 3rd place winner in the Optimist Club Essay Contest. She was invited to read her essay at a luncheon in honor of the winners.
Sarah and I attended Swan Lake by the World Ballet Company.
Next dance competition was solo only at Inferno.
She got a "Staff Choice" pin from the backstage staff person immediately after her solo!
The competition was local this time (2 miles from our house, in fact), so the boys were able to come see Sarah compete.
The younger dancers look up to her.
Sarah is an assistant teacher this year for the littlest competition dancers, the "Teenies" and "Minis". She goes to their competition dates/times even when they are different days than she competes. She goes on stage with them for awards to help as well. Here is when one of her littles was rewarded 1st place in the youngest age category. So cute!
We celebrated Nanny and Uncle Brian's birthdays, also with aggressively sized birthday candles! Ha!
Easter celebrations - Easter baskets and eggs, brunch with the fam, then Lion King at the Orpheum!
Austin participated in a weekend at the Model UN in Minneapolis.
In10sity Dance Competition
Trevor had a quick Y14 local tournament on Sunday.
Sadly, this day was a difficult one, as Austin had 2 seizures. He awoke not feeling well and didn't go to his school soccer team futsal training. He had a seizure shortly before 11am and then another at 9:30pm. The one in the evening was particularly terrifying because he was sitting in his bed on his laptop and, when he felt the seizure coming, he apparently leaned over to put his laptop on his desk, but that positioned him such that when he started to seize, he fell into a face down position on his bed which made him unable to breathe! Trevor and Sarah were in their bedrooms asleep, Steve was in his home office, and I was going to go get in the shower, but delayed a couple minutes playing a game on my phone. Thank God I did, because I was the only one that heard Austin make a noise and I checked his video monitor and found that he was facedown on his bed seizing! I was able to run upstairs and flip him over so he could breathe, but he was turning blue and, had I not heard him and repositioned him, he would have suffocated and died! He is typically unconscious for 30-60 minutes after a seizure. Had I gotten in the shower a couple minutes earlier and not heard him, Austin would be dead. This was the first time he had 2 seizures in a day, also. Since then, he has increased his medication dose and added in a new medication that takes a few months to titrate up to the goal dose. We also have purchased him a wristwatch seizure monitor that notifies Steve and I by phone call and text when he is having a seizure.
The first dance competition of the season with her team!
Her solo got a Judge's Choice Awared for "Polished and Poised"
"Ooh Child" - Lyrical Line
Tap small group - "Stubborn Love"
Production - "Puttin' On the Swing"
Contemporary - "Miss Those Days"
Tap - "Shake Your Pants"
Jazz - "Video Killed the Radio Star"
Supportive big brothers.
(I couldn't leave Austin home alone until his seizure monitor watch arrived and Trevor had a fencing tournament in St. Louis, MO that Dad brought him to, so Austin had to come with me the whole day.)
Here are the little dancers Sarah is an assistant teacher for...
The YEL crew at Bill Starr in St. Louis for the regional tournament.
The following weekend was a busy one!
Austin had his Quiz Bowl Nationals Competition with his team, the Bowler Express.
Mr. J brought them donuts and said a prayer with them before the competition.
Trevor had a regional fencing tournament in Chicago.
Meanwhile, Sarah had another dance competition, Kids Artistic Review (KAR)
Sarah was featured on the competition's social media page!
She earned an "Elite Top First" for her solo, which is the top scoring category!
Sarah had her spring band concert.
Trevor was chosen to play trombone in the band next year and will start lessons this summer.
We got him a trombone from Inessa Geske and he is very excited to play "King" in the band!
Metro Peds had a table at the Bloomington Baby Resource Fair and I gave a presentation at the event as well.
The Northern Lights were visible from our area on May 10th, so Trevor and I decided to drive away from the light pollution to get a better view!
Success!
I've been working hard to eat healthy and exercise with my E2M Fitness program to stay strong and healthy. It is paying off. I pulled this dress from college out of my closet and it fit well!
Mother's Day brunch at the club.
Trevor was Paul Revere for Night of the Notables.
Trevor and some of his classmates competed in the Social Studies Spectacular in Mankato.
They had lots of fun and did a great job against much older kids!
Trevor was also a Westwood Pride winner in May.
Then one last dance competition for the season, this one with ALL the dances, including Dads and Dolls and Darby's Dancers!
Here is the Darby's Dancers performance. Sarah's buddy is Allison and they are on the right of most of these pics.
Dads and Dolls - "Legends"
Steve was Elvis and they did tap for their section!
Their jazz dance "Video Killed the Radio Star" won 1st place, so they celebrated at awards by killing Violet (who plays the radio star in the dance).
(Don't worry, she's OK.)
Trevor won the 5th grade poetry slam at school with his poem about a dragon.
At his spring concert, Austin played alto sax in the jazz band, as well as alto and bari sax in the concert band.
Trevor discovered he really likes pomegranates!
One of my nursing assistants at work used Snap Chat filters to make pics of all of us in the 90s! So funny!
Then recital weekend!
Sarah's littles just ADORE her!
We finished the school year strong with high honor roll for Austin at BSM despite the difficult year!
Trevor improved his math scores from below expectations to exceeds expectations! (He is also in grade accelerated math, so taking honors 6th grade math in 5th grade). Sarah did an awesome job at school as well and was also voted by her (very large) 8th grade class to be most likely to be president!
The end of the year was a bit stressful, with big projects on my agenda, including all the busy schedules for the kids, being a super user for my clinic's EMR change, spearheading the dance studio's yearbook again this year, and planning/preparing for an international trip with 10 people! We made it through and were ready to head off on our epic vacation.
Stay tuned for a post about the trip next!
After that will be fencing nationals, Grandview Lodge family reunion, summer intensives for Sarah, and college application time for Austin!
